Back-to-School Brain: Resetting Routines and Getting Ready to Learn

Updated: Aug 26

Summer was fun. Maybe even a little too fun — sleep schedules got weird, routines vanished, and structure? What structure?

That’s totally normal. But now it’s time to help your brain switch gears so you’re ready to learn, grow, and crush this school year.

Step 1: Reset Your Routines (Gently!)

You don’t have to go from late-night beach bonfires to 6 a.m. alarms overnight. Start with small adjustments:

  • Shift bedtime by 15–30 minutes earlier every few nights

  • Set a morning routine — even if it’s just brushing your teeth and stretching

  • Eat meals on a schedule to help your body feel grounded again

Getting back into rhythm helps your brain feel safe and ready to focus.

Step 2: Rebuild Executive Functioning Systems

Executive functioning is how we organize, plan, focus, and follow through. During summer, those systems often go offline. Now’s the time to:

  • Find a planner or digital calendar that excites you

  • Choose a designated homework space

  • Talk about what a successful week might look like — and what to do when it doesn’t go as planned

Systems aren’t one-size-fits-all. Find what works for your brain.

Step 3: Clear Out the Mental Clutter

New school year = new chance to let go of old stress.

  • Clean out your backpack, desk, and digital files

  • Make a “brain dump” list of things you need to remember

  • Reflect on last year (see our July post!) and leave behind what didn’t serve you

Final Thought

Easing into structure sets you up for a strong start — without the overwhelm. A little intention now goes a long way in helping your brain feel ready when the school bell rings.
